{"id":2973,"date":"2015-12-07T12:45:23","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T11:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gojute.co.uk\/?p=2973"},"modified":"2022-09-30T13:11:11","modified_gmt":"2022-09-30T12:11:11","slug":"the-charge-for-single-use-carriers-has-also-raised-around-6-7m-for-good-causes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gojuteinternational.com\/en\/resources\/the-charge-for-single-use-carriers-has-also-raised-around-6-7m-for-good-causes","title":{"rendered":"The charge for single-use carriers has also raised around \u00a36.7m for good causes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of plastic carrier bags handed out in stores was slashed by at least 650 million in the first year of Scotland\u2019s 5p charge.<\/p>\n<p>New figures released on the anniversary of its introduction indicate the levy has cut usage by around 80%, equivalent to 650 million fewer bags than in previous years.<\/p>\n<p>The charge for single-use carriers has also raised around \u00a36.7m for good causes in the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-feature--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/static\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/pictures\/2015\/9\/30\/1443629215940\/b4baef2c-859a-4460-920b-167917c2543a-2060x1236.jpeg?w=460&amp;q=85&amp;auto=format&amp;sharp=10&amp;s=654182b669152def9c1e8b7fefcd2e61\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<h1 class=\"rich-link__title\"><a class=\"rich-link__link\">Excess baggage: will the 5p charge finally kill the plastic bag?<\/a><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__arrow\">Morrisons, the Co-operative, Waitrose and Boots have all reported an estimated 80% reduction in carrier bag use, with Asda witnessing a drop of 90% and Sainsbury\u2019s 100% as it no longer offers them to shoppers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Announcing the figures, Scotland\u2019s Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead hailed the 5p charge as a \u201cmajor success\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cPreviously statistics showed that people in Scotland used more than 800 million new single-use carrier bags every single year &#8211; more per head than anywhere else in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank Scotland for embracing this policy and showing we\u2019re serious about tackling litter, reducing waste and creating a cleaner, greener environment for everyone to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s now becoming second nature to shoppers to reuse their carrier bags and hopefully to think more about our impact on the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A reduction of 650m bags means a net saving of more than 4,000 tonnes of plastic and other materials each year.<\/p>\n<p>This is the equivalent of more than 500m single-use carrier bags once it is offset by estimated increases in other forms of plastic bag, such as bags for life.<\/p>\n<p>The net carbon saving is more than 2,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.<\/p>\n<p>All retailers are being urged to sign up to Scotland\u2019s carrier bag commitment, an agreement to disclose information on the charge and donations made.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of plastic carrier bags handed out in stores was slashed by at least 650 million in the first year of Scotland\u2019s 5p charge.
